Sulfahexafluoride Gas

jay lenoOK, I just saw the coolest thing I have seen in a LONG TIME! I’m watching Jay Leno and he has a guest on tonight, Mad Scientist David Willey. He is explaining sulfahexafluoride gas. Apparently it is a gas that is denser than air so he has a balloon filled with air and with sulfahexafluoride, and the sxf (I am going to call it that for short) balloon falls super fast to the floor, but that is nothing.

He opens up a large glass box (picture a fish aquarium) filled with sxf and they make tin-foil boats and they “float” them there in mid-air inside the box. Of course the bowls are floating on top of the denser than air sxf. They then blow bubbles at it and of course they bounce right of this mid-air.

Willey then shows how this gas will not conduct electricity by placing a 400,000 volt zapper inside the glass box and it immediately shuts off.

But, the BEST part was that the scientist called sxf the “anti-helium” gas. So Jay, says something like “you mean if I suck this in it will make my voice lower?” - he was joking, but the scientist wasn’t, he had Jay go right ahead. And wouldn’t you know it, Jay started talking and it sounded like a slowed down recording. He was cracking up and so was I. Willey then joined in as Jay called his other guest, Josh Duhamel, to come and try it, which he did - it was hilarious! Maybe the youtube video will come out soon.

Now onto Conan - Jim Carrey is on tonight!

The Best Show on TV

crossroads It’s a love/hate relationship that I have with my TV. When Lost, The Office, and 24 are on, life is good - when they’re not I don’t even feel like turning it on. But one good thing about having our favorite shows off is that we have to look for other things to watch. I am a History Channel addict on top of the previously mentioned shows, Mega-Movers, Engineering an Empire, Cities of the Underworld, Modern Marvels, Star Wars: The Legacy Revealed, and a new favorite, Universe.

That all being said, my favorite show on right now is CMT’s Crossroads. Check out the line-up’s:

  • Bon Jovi and Sugarland (saw it - great!)
  • Lindsey Buckingham and Little Big Town (waiting)
  • Bonnie Raitt and Lyle Lovett (should be AWESOME!)
  • Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers (the 80’s in a nutshell)
  • Bruce Hornsby and Ricky Skaggs (AMAZING!)
  • Los Lonely Boys and Ronnie Milsap
  • Dave Matthews and Emmylou Harris (should be groovy)
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd and Montgomery Gentry (saw it, a little too much guitar hero)
  • Elton John and Ryan Adams (huh?)
  • Melissa Etheridge and Dolly Parton (huh wha?)
  • Elvis Costello and Lucinda Williams
  • Pat Benatar and Martina McBride
  • Heart and Wynonna (saw it, OK, not a Wynonna fan)
  • Ray Charles and Travis Tritt (how did they do that? Maybe it’s Jamie Foxx)
  • James Taylor and Dixie Chicks (Travis should be all about this one!)
  • Sheryl Crow and Willie Nelson
  • John Fogerty and Keith Urban (AMAZING!)
  • Steve Earle and Rosanne Cash
  • John Mayer and Brad Paisley (waiting on pins and needles!)
  • Toby Keith’s Shock ‘n Y’all Super Bowl Party
  • John Mellencamp and Kenny Chesney (can’t wait!)
  • ZZ Top and Brooks & Dunn (one of the best!)
  • Kelly Clarkson and Reba McEntire (saw it, and although I am anti-Reba, thought it was amazing)

What’s your favorite show?

America’s got (no) Talent

Sitting here with the wife watching the season premier of America’s got Talent. Wow. Sharon Osborne and David Hasselhoff, it’s like American Idol done on a 100th of the budget with written in scenes, slapstick comedy, and horrific auditions. Best quotes of the night:

  • “I drive a bus” - Mr. Bill (singer)
  • “eeaahhh, eeaahhh, eeaahhh” - buzzers before the Elvis even sang
  • “You got better, and your wife got worse” - Piers (the judge)
  • “Have you guys ever tried waxing?” - Sharon
  • “What are you going to do?” “I’m going to entertain you!” - The Hoff & Andrew the sax player

This went on for two hours, and I watched every minute of it.

Star Wars: The Legacy Revealed

I grew up with Star Wars. I specifically remember playing with my Death Star base with Luke, Leah, Han Solo, C3PO, R2D2, Darth Vader, and a Stormtrooper or two. It had the trash compactor filled with sponge-like trash - it was so cool. I think my best friend at that time had an actual Millennium Falcon - now THAT was cool!

So you’ll understand why I set my DVR to record last weekend’s “Star Wars: the Legacy Revealed” on the History Channel. Just got a chance to watch it today and I was not dissapointed (although it was weird seeing Dan Wrather talking about the Force).

All in all, a very interesting show. It really pulled to light the amazing storytelling by Lucas comparing the movie and its characters to historical stories & myths, biblical stories, archetypes, governments, wars, etc. Pretty interesting stuff. If you are either a Star Wars or History fan, I highly recommend it.

I ain’t scared of Dancing

danceWell I may not dance (per se), but I am man enough to admit that I have a new favorite show: So You Think You Can Dance. I am thoroughly addicted after 2 nights. I pretty much thought that my TV watching life was over after last week. No more LOST, 24, The Office, American Idol, Survivor - what’s left? I know, that’s exactly what I was thinking! Until we watched this season of “So You Think You Can Dance” - these people are amazing! Tonight’s episode was the best - there was a robot dancing guy who has scoliosis; he was the best dang robot dancer I have EVER seen (and I have seen a lot!). So I have a new favorite show, a new reason to set my DVR, and a new way to waste an hour in the evening.

We’re watching “The Next Best Thing” as well - and I laughed pretty hard.
