Craigslist Scam: Homes for Rent
Periodically we look through Craigslist for random stuff (isn’t that what Craigslist is for?). Anyway, we were looking at rentals to see what’s available in our area – any better deals, etc. We came across this (what appeared to be a) sweet deal [link may or may not work now]. So I quickly sent off an email to michaeljacoby81@yahoo.com. What I got back was very strangely worded:

As you can see, some strange wording, plus they asked for the name of my dog (which I thought was really weird). So I googled “+234-806-113-3966″ and found this post, this post, with a strangely familiar responses from the ‘owner’. I also found this site with tons of information on rental scammers.

I SEARCHED EVERY SINGLE LISTING FOR HOUSES FOR EACH DAY NEW POSTINGS WOULD BE UP, AND I HAVE YET TO FIND A LISTING THAT ISNT A SCAM. CRAIGSLIST SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY HARD WORKING HONEST PEOPLE THAT NEED A PLACE TO LIVE AND USE CRAIGSLIST TO TRY AND FIND SOMETHING, BUT CANT DO SO DUE TO THE SCAMMERS. I ACTUALLY WENT OUT TO LOOK AT ONE OF THE HOUSES, AND THE PERSON THAT WAS LIVING THERE SAID THEY HAD A LEASE FOR A YEAR AND WERE ONLY A FEW MONTHS IN AND DIDNT KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON, SO I INFORMED HER OF WHAT HAD HAPPENED AND GAVE HER THE LISTINGS poc EMAIL ADDRESS, AND THEY TRIED TO RENT HER THE HOUSE AS WELL, AND SHE WAS ALREADY RENTING IT. I got that email this morning about a house in Wichita, Ks. We really almost fell for it. The scammer actually called me and that’s what tipped us off. His accent was extremely thick and hard to understand, not at all what I pictured from a christian man trying to rent a home in the heartland of America. Not to forget that he seemed really worried about when we could get him his $650. He kept asking if we could send him a money gram today. I told him we could try to do it within an hour, but it was so fishy my fiancee and I decided to review the email again and when I typed in the Christian Crusaders thing I got all these scam sites warning me it was fake. He’s called me about 15 times since this morning and text my phone a few times. I was just really glad we decided to look into it!
