Craigslist Scam: Homes for Rent
Periodically we look through Craigslist for random stuff (isn’t that what Craigslist is for?). Anyway, we were looking at rentals to see what’s available in our area – any better deals, etc. We came across this (what appeared to be a) sweet deal [link may or may not work now]. So I quickly sent off an email to michaeljacoby81@yahoo.com. What I got back was very strangely worded:

It seems this scam has moved to Southwest Florida….found a beautiful home in an amazing development on Craig’s List…for $600. We thought it was a typo and it should have been for $1600. Thank God for the internet and a little research to find out this was a scam. Renters, beware!
I came across the same scam, for a townhouse in Towaco, NJ with Susan Powell. I filled out the “Application Form” like an idiot and got this response:

We have decided to let you live in our house. As we have found your application very setisfactry and acceptable by my family. so we would want you to go through the acceptance form and get back to us on what you feel.we would like to send the following document to you via UPS Shipping Agent to the address you sent to us and the tracking number will be sent to you so that you can possibly occupy our house, Please once again, we are giving you this on trust and do not dissapoint us and i promise you that, you will love the house.
The utilities and damages are included in the monthly rent, so you dont have to worry about that okay.we are very happy for you beening our new tenant okay.If you can come up with the security deposit today by tomorrow the keys and the document will be sent to you with the tracking number as well.
Here are the contents of the document that needs to be sent.
1) Entrance and the rooms Keys
2) Paper/Permanent house form

Once they “approved” us they had never cleared up the length of the lease and I emailed back asking and have not heard back from them, it’s been 3 days.

I filled out the application as well and then discovered it was a scam. I’m concerned that they have my information as well. I did find an official FBI notification and it says to report the “419″ scam (I’ve discovered that 419 is the number of the Nigerian law for this crime) to your local FBI office. I have sent an email to the Kansas City office regarding a house in Lee’s Summit, MO that was recently posted. I have also put temporary fraud alerts on my information through the three credit reporting agencies (if you report it one, they will update the other two). I’m so annoyed by the amount of time and energy I’ve had to put into this.

I found the same exact thing it is no doubt a scam I have been doing my research on this and the tax records are public I pulled it up and sure enough they got the name right. Then I googled the address and it pulled up a realestate company trying to sell the house which the company had no idea about. DONT FALL FOR IT DO YOUR OWN INVESTIGATING AND USE GOOGLE IT WORKS.

The house was listed at other sites for 1500, so when I saw 1100 I was hoping they had just gotten desperate and lowered what they were asking for! I googled the “international christian follower’s crusade” since I thought that was a little weird, and found this site and others detailing the scam. Oh well…like everyone has said, too good to be true.

I am disgusted! My friend told me to be careful of craigs list ads. I knew it sounded too good to be true. Then when I emailed back some questions I had, all he responded with was that me app was accepted and as soon as I send the money I can have the keys..hmmm…here is the email i received. My wife got the same email as well. We went to the house and took a look at it. There was a for sale sign out front with a sold sign on it. That was the first red flag for me. Yet she still believed in it. She sent in the answers to the questions and we got the same response you all got. Whatever part of it they would like to use they can. We’re moving from out place soon due to forecloser. Credit is down the toilets and bankruptcy. They aren’t gonna get crap out of us. I hope nobody else falls for their scams. Apparently the bogus “Jay a Curtis jr” is catching on – I got a similar mail reply as Jason above, but for the same house at 2535 Myrtle in San Diego. However, this time the story changed slightly – he’s supposedly in the Navy and transferring to Atlanta. (SPAWAR has facilities there)
The REAL Jay A Curtis Jr. is the present owner of the property, and he bought, renovated and flipped to a new owner, who has yet to move in. These people do their research, lift accurate photos from real estate listings, create email addresses based of the real owner’s names, etc., but the emails they send are idiotic.

The photos in the Craigslist ad (now flagged) were copied from the realtor’s listing for the property. Wherever these scams originate, they apparently have local help, since the County of San Diego does not yet have free online access to owner names associated with residential property. The house was bought by the real Mr. Curtis in late October, 2009and was in construction for much of the winter, and only recently listed for sale and sold.
So whoever is doing this, they are getting accurate owner info, accurate interior photos from the realtor’s site, and they are timing the ads to coincide with the house being ready to occupy and vacant – a very short window of time.
According to the realtor who handled the sale, this is very common and happens to her and several other realtors she knows on a regular basis.
Ok, this is really creepy! I just got the exact same email in response to my inquiry into a nice looking house in Williamsport, PA – I won’t paste it in here, cos it’s verbatim the same as all the other, except the owner’s name is ‘James Lucas’. I also found the language and the general style somewhat weird, so I googled the christian crusade stuff and found this site! I’m glad I did!! I flagged the craigslist ad as spam, but I’m not sure if there’s anything else that can be done to stop these people from polluting the real estate market…

A friend of mine was momentarily caught up in the same scam, but it smelled fishy to her. If only the Nigerians could actually read and write, they might have slightly more success at this scam…The crummy grammar was a dead giveaway. For future Googlers, mine used the following contact information:

Just had the same email and like adumb ass filed out part of the aplicaton! Mine was in las Vegas Nevada. The name used was reverand dr Dorothy j woods a male with the name Dorothy! Never heard of a male named Dorothy had a feeling so mad at myself that I filled out the app though!
I like the others, am looking for a nice 3 bdrm house, so when I saw this ad, house in Everett, Wa for rent at a nice price, I emailed them, and probably won’t hear back,cause I asked if this was a scam. I think I will go and see the house just curious. Things like this piss me off. Sure glad I stumbled on to this site.

ok .. this one got me too. lucky my girlfriend reminded me of the scam, that’s when i googled hospitals project prayer crusade & keita kawahata. as we’ve been house hunting for awhile now… boy i feel so stupid for being excited ’bout the house.
I found a too-good-to-be-true house advertised on CL in my area last month with rent about $1,000 below market rate. I suspected this was a foreclosure scam (non-owner trying pose as prospective landlord), but lo & behold it was the same scam you all have encountered (with a religious flavor)!

We recently listed our home for sale on craigslist in the “for sale by owner” section.
The next day, I found a scam posting with our information on it, claiming that our house was for RENT for a fraction of what any home in our area would ever rent for.
The scammers are plagiarizing craigslist ads with houses listing exact addresses that are vacant. When an interested renter replies to their ad, they suggest driving by the house because the exact address is listed. Because the house is vacant, no one is around to answer questions or alert the “potential renters”.
We found out people were coming by in droves to look at the house. Hopefully no one sent personal information or money.
Thankfully, I found this post right away, although it took craigslist days to remove it.

They had us hooked for awhile, but their poor sentence structure and lack of specifics started to get me suspicious. I then got to the point on how to send money and when the said western union I started to google craigslist scams and came across this. Pretty sad how people prey on those in need!
We got the same exact email about the 3br in Portland, Maine for 700 a month we actually drove by the house today and there was trash on the lawn and a car out front of the house…seemed kinda fishy went back night time and noticed a lamp on in the window place looked runned down with a grill in the yard with table set for outside looked as if someone was living there. trash was also gone when we went back the 2nd time. I Knew it was fishy as soon as they guy emailed and said he would need the 700 bucks before we could get the keys and the paperwork we looked up this house in Portland on the city of portland site for taxes and found the name of the actual owner they must be going on the citys website and finding actual names of the owners and using them as their names…bunch of morons is what they are. TOMORROW WE ARE GOING TO THIS PERSONS HOUSE AND WE ARE GOING TO TELL THEM ALL ABOUT THE SCAM THAT IS ON CRAIGSLIST ABOUT THIER HOUSE AND WE ARE GIVING THEM THE NAMES THAT WERE ON THE PORTLAND WEBSITE AND THE EMAIL ADDRESS OF THE SCUMBAG THAT EMAILED US..

I did bid for a portion of petroleum land sometimes ago in West Africa and fortunately I won the bidding so I have to move quickly down to Africa to have my company set up because I will still have to rebid for it in the next 10 years. As soon as we settle down here I had a thought of selling the house so I have to look for an agent, after getting one, we got a deal but later my wife advised against that.. I know there is no way I can be sure that you are the right person to live in the house because we won’t be able to see physical before sending you the keys and the documents to occupy the space. But I just had a feeling that anyone who knows what it takes to put the kind of structure down should know that maintaining a building is mandatory, so if you belief you can take good care of the house and handle it like yours then I will be more than happy to let you rent the

OMG the same thing happen to me… i was so happy that i found the perfect house for my family. i even send him a $300 deposit that he asked for and he was going to send me the keys and paperwork by FedEx…I totally believed in him and me and my husband decided that we wasn’t going to tell nobody about the wonderful home that we found that way we can surprise everybody… Thanks god i decided to tell my friend what me and my husband was doing and she very fast Googled the number he gave me and i made a stop on the payment from western union very fast thanks god in africa its night time and where i live is daytime so when i sent the money he didnt have time to take it out because it was night time over there and everything was closed…..This is what he wrote to me

I did get your response concerning the AD I posted on craigslist. The house is still available but presently I’m not around.. I did bid for a portion of petroleum land sometimes ago in West Africa and fortunately I won the bidding so I have to move quickly down to Africa to have my company set up because I will still have to rebid for it in the next 10 years. I came over here with my wife, we both built the house when we got married. As soon as we settle down here I had a thought of selling the house so I have to look for an agent, after getting one, we got a deal but later my wife advised against that.. She said we may not be able to win the bidding next time, in other to keep our head when we return that we have to keep the house. I reasoned with her and accepted her advise. So I contacted the agent back and requested for my keys and documents. Later we decided to have the house rent out, we would have give the same agent this job also but the truth of the matter is that the agent would want to handle it professionally and the occupant may not be able to reason along with him later. If you notice, you will discovered that the price we are offering is far below standard price, this is enough for you to know that we are not after the rental fee but the absolute care for the property. I know there is no way I can be sure that you are the right person to live in the house because we won’t be able to see physical before sending you the keys and the documents to occupy the space. But I just had a feeling that anyone who knows what it takes to put the kind of structure down should know that maintaining a building is mandatory, so if you belief you can take good care of the house and handle it like yours then I will be more than happy to let you rent the
house.
