Craigslist Scam: Homes for Rent
Periodically we look through Craigslist for random stuff (isn’t that what Craigslist is for?). Anyway, we were looking at rentals to see what’s available in our area – any better deals, etc. We came across this (what appeared to be a) sweet deal [link may or may not work now]. So I quickly sent off an email to michaeljacoby81@yahoo.com. What I got back was very strangely worded:

As you can see, some strange wording, plus they asked for the name of my dog (which I thought was really weird). So I googled “+234-806-113-3966″ and found this post, this post, with a strangely familiar responses from the ‘owner’. I also found this site with tons of information on rental scammers.
Like the old saying goes, ‘If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn’t…’
So this just happened to me… I was totally persuaded until I got the second response… Kind of sucks because I got excited…

I googled Lyle L Delasky and it is someone else!!! The person I spoke with on the phone was INDIAN. The picture from google’s website of the real Lyle Delasky is a caucasian realtor… I am calling the real Lyle to let him know his name is being stolen.
Here is my response to the Indian poser scam guy’ latest email-
I aplogize but I will no longer be interested in leasing your home. I am not sending any amount of money to anyone without meeting them or a property manager.
I feel incredibly uncomfortable with doing so and there are too many scams on craigslist.
You may be a man of your word and a man of God himself, but in this day in age you cannot simply expect someone to send you any amount of money with such an unprofessional situation.
I do not understand why there is not a property manager or a neighbor who could have the keys and/or show the property . Ive never had to pay anyone anything before actually being able to get inside the place and look at it.
The whole situation seems very unacceptable and makes me uneasy.
I thank you for your time and I wish you luck getting your $500 in such a gray situation.

Thank god I found this post before I sent any money, you just can’t trust anyone. PS, most counties in most states have a register of deeds so you can see who owns a property before you make any agreements or send any money to anyone, also if you can go to the house and talk to the neighbors, it’s extra work but whenever someone wants you to send money!!!! It’s worth the extra work.

People are RENTING not house sitting. No one is going to pay to house sit for you.
I’ve noticed that for apartment/house rental scams the person is unnecessarily long with their emails, giving pointless information. Most places you contact will simply reply with a “sure, what time would you like to make an appointment to view the suite?”
Also I am thinking of sending a letter to notify the ACTUAL property owners of what their address if being used for. Has anyone done this yet? Just curious to see if anyone got a response if they did.
I got suckered by this group – I was desparate to find a place to live….with not much money… but didn’t send them any funds… just filled out and gave them too much information!!! crap.
This guy is still out there and doing his thing! From craigslist I saw a “too good to be true” house so I emailed the ad to figure out if the house was in the area I was looking for. This is the email I first got which is almost exactly like these others. After responding with him/her and asking to look at the house they claimed the only person with a set of keys was out of the state for a family emergency. I went and personally looked at the house (which was the same as the pictures I saw) but when I called the FOR RENT sign it was a completely different lady.

I just came across the same scam, same email response back. Did not send any personal info back though just pushed to be able to view the home. Also, did as someone else here had done searched the address and it actually comes up listed to the person they are claiming to be. I have reported them to Craigslist don’t know if that will do any good. I am also going to report them to the local authorities don’t know if that will help any but hey it’s worth a shot…..right!!!

Got the same email as above but using the name “Terry Hill”. Email address was shing.jones@yahoo.com, which made me leery because the names didn’t match. I googled the phone number and viola! I see all of these posts with identical emails. I emailed several sites that list this property for rent to inform them of the scam and flagged the Craigslist ad for the property in Zephyrhills, FL as well as posted a warning on Craigs about it.
We received a response to an ad on Craigslist for a residence in Sammamish, WA. with the same wording and rental application. Drove by the house, it is not vacant and too nice to be rented for only $ 1000. I sure hope this creep gets caught; but chances are slim.
Yeah I got a email scam too. What I find interesting is that these people are also looking up the the property owners name and establishing a yahoo that looks like the same names as owner. What a bunch of scumbags. Don’t know how these people sleep at night taking peoples money like that and wish everyone would know that any out of state or out of country transactions are not worth the hassle. If the people are not local or with a local realator don’t do it. Now a days we as renters have a right to check out the owner to verify owner ship. Actually that would be a great idea to educate people how to do that.
Oh my Gosh, this exactthing just happened to me! The same exact wording and same exact story. I feel so stupid, becasuse I actaully believed it for a minute. This must be common, I decided to google the christian follower’s group they said they’re in Nigeria for, and this page is what came up, along with a bunch of other articles about craigslist rental scams.

We were communicating back and forth and after a while he is not replying back I guess he opened the attachment. I also found the real realtor renting the residence for $1475 and his legit. (:

The scam involves the setting up of outsourcing offices. Then both the business and the workers are taken for a ride. The funds are gradually misappropriated and stolen, until all the funds are spent. This is done with inflated bills for products and services by suppliers, who provide kickbacks to Sherman Chin.
I am an owner of property in Wisconsin which was the target of this type of craigslist scam involving the phone number 234-819-148-3183. Fortunately, several of the people who responded to the bogus ad drove by my property, got my real phone number, and called me about it. They received the same e-mail with the same information requested, the same awkward wording, and the same excuses for not being able to show the house. This is identity theft of the owner’s identity. I have reported it to the local police and they are following up with an investigation. They will at least be able to get the IP address from which the bogus cl ad came. I reported it to cl, but they did absolutely nothing! All of this occurred within the past week.
BTW, I also put a fraud alert on my credit report, and anyone who has given out personal information in one of these scams should do the same. Perhaps change it to a credit freeze after 90 days.
Thanks to the cooperation of the people who responded to the ad, we have the telephone number, and I found this site by googling the number. Please keep up the posting here, it helps prevent others from falling victim and may help in the investigation.

I received one of these emails also, he has expanded out to include the beautiful state of Hawaii….wow, this guy has a lot of property??? ha,ha. Don’t send any money….especially to Nigeria…FOR ANYTHING…they did another dog scam from Lagos, Nigeria the first part of this year….
Good luck to everyone, hope no one got scammed by this person, oh, yeah, the name that “she” used on my email was Sherylyn McCathy…..and the phone number was 234-807-229-9208.
I want to warn you of a Cate/Cathy Cleary. First email sounded ok but strangely worded, the second one very strange indeed. Google search showed a handful of serious business posts, then came the anti-scam sites… Didn’t agree to anything but still annoying. Beware!

Alternatively, you can scan your letter of employment or admission letter as reference. The insured cost of shipping is also about £133 pounds. More so, after viewing the apartment, if you do not like it, you will also be responsible for sending us back our keys and documents.

Definently drove to the house and knocked on the door and people were living there. Just moved in said that the person mentioned was the land lord as well. Im curious how these people moved in, and If they are connected to the scam.
I was looking through Craigslist and came across a 3 bedroom/2 bth for 950…where I live that would be an amazing deal because homes that size will run you 2000 or more. So I emailed the guy about the home and got the exact same message back! I was a little sceptical since he was overseas and decided to google international Christian followers crusades which directed me to this wonderful website!! I wasnt going to call the guy just because of the overseas call and have heard that people that call from nigeria will run your phone bill up thousands of dollars!!

What happens if I didn’t know (um, yah, go ahead and call me a complete naive idiot) and I filled out the appplication. It asked for name, phone number, birthdate, landlord’s phone number, current address, reason for leaving, and some very basic information that was not personal like how many cars and how many pets and when i want to move in and how soon can pay the deposit.Can they screw up my credit identity with my name, birthdate, address, and phone number???
This f*cker tried to get me too!!! I never sent him any money, but for a minute there, I didn’t imagine it could be malicious and filled out the stupid application. Although I didn’t give ALL the information they asked for, I took the necessary steps to protect myself and reported this S.O.B. to the proper authorities who investigate fraudulent/phishing emails. His email is being tracked as we speak. I also contacted the original owners of the home and they were shocked to hear that their home, which is already occupied, is being used on craigslist as a scam. They are also reporting this to all the necessary sites, authorities, etc. These jerks are searching public records and posing as the homeowners, using email addresses that seem legit. It’s so sad that they are using God to get people to trust them too. Shows what kind of scumbags they truly are! They’ll get what they deserve soon!
