Craigslist Scam: Homes for Rent
Periodically we look through Craigslist for random stuff (isn’t that what Craigslist is for?). Anyway, we were looking at rentals to see what’s available in our area – any better deals, etc. We came across this (what appeared to be a) sweet deal [link may or may not work now]. So I quickly sent off an email to michaeljacoby81@yahoo.com. What I got back was very strangely worded:

As you can see, some strange wording, plus they asked for the name of my dog (which I thought was really weird). So I googled “+234-806-113-3966″ and found this post, this post, with a strangely familiar responses from the ‘owner’. I also found this site with tons of information on rental scammers.
Like the old saying goes, ‘If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn’t…’
I knew this was too good to be true! I decided to google “international christian followers crusade” and this came up, thank goodness cause when I googled his name, Justin Tabibian, nothing came up! gotta love craigslist and their scammers!
I am thankful that I looked up christian followers crusade as well and it just saved me some grief but am really bummed. Well I only looked because of the old sayin”if something is to good to be true it probably is thank you for the info.
Oh dear! That really smells fishy. We deal with scammers on daily basis. Last one supposedly was an oil magnate, wanting to buy properties worth zillions unseen. I learned to google every email address and telephone number that I receive with an internet inquiry! Helps

Got the same exact email as first listed in the blog. It is a house listed here in Minneapolis, MN. From the first email I could tell it was a scam, but just to play along I made a fake email and posed as someone actually interested. S/he is expecting the money. All the info I filled out on the so-called app is fake! LOL, I thought it was funny how this jackass thought I could be so dumb. I hope some day this person gets caught! I’ve read that he actually does call the numbers. He will be surprised when he calls “Kathy” and there is no Kathy at any of the numbers LOL. Here is where he wanted me to send the payment-

I ran the name through Facebook and came up with a *real* Holly Ronquillo, who looked like she might fit except the picture shows three children. And then spokeo.com, which listed a different address in Fontana. Still skeptical, I ran the conference in nigeria and came up with this site, so *thank you*! Too bad… I desperately *do* need to find housing for me and fam for next 4 years while back in grad school… :/ Guess I’ll keep looking…

I just got the same thing back from one. They are smart enough to get into the county property appraiser and use an actual persons name. One dead give away is the lack of proper grammar. What business professional would present an email such as this. The bastards are trying to make these things look very legit.

I replied back with general information but not too personal. Thank God I googled and found this.

I found an ad that was super similar to this one. Im SURE its the same guy, with the grammar and the religion crap. they provided the address in the second email, and since it wasn’t too far from where we were checking out apartments, me and my roommates decided to go check it out. The For Rent sign had the real owners numbers and when i talked to him, he seemed helluh annoyed. Im actually still corresponding with the scammer, I’m going to see if i can catch them

It seems to me that this is more than one or a handful of people. I think it is an overseas organized group that does this regularly. I think that’s why it doesn’t seem to phase them when their posts are reported as scams. There are so many out there and so many people coming accross them that we can’t even make a dent in their scam. I’ve been looking at housing in south FL since this summer; I’ve run accross this same scam under different locations more times than I can count now. This would be a great undercover investigative journalism report for someone.
