Surfacy TV Post

Uncategorized

I’ll start this off with a little TV history for our family. When we got married 8 years ago, Jen and I didn’t have TV for the first few years. We were those people who, when everybody was talking about how funny Seinfeld was, and how awesome Friends was – we just kind of stood there looking blankly at each other. Then Jen got pregnant with Miles and got bored at home, so we decided to jump in. We jumped in softy, just basic cable; no worries.

Fast forward a few more years.

Now we had the Dish DVR with two TV’s and over 100 hours of record time. We did it all. Survivor, LOST, 24, The Office, So You Think You Can Dance, America’s Got Talent, American Idol, Desperate Housewives, Greys Anatomy, Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, Saturday Night Live, History Channel, Discovery Channel, Austin City Limits, Nashville Star, Heroes, shall I continue? And of course for the kids there was Sesame Street, Builder Bob, Dora, Power Rangers, Yo Gabba Gabba, Scooby Doo, Pokemon, Loony Tunes, Batman, Ben Ten… sick to your stomach yet?

Fast forward to present day. No cable. Yup, we went cold turkey. And it’s been great! But I’m not gonna lie, we’re still closet TV freaks! Now we just watch what’s available online, which is considerably less – and it’s nice because we don’t just crank on the tube and veg out.

All that to say that we’re excited about the fall/winter & the upcoming shows that we’ve been missing all summer. We’ve gotten better & tried to pare down our list of must see shows.

Here’s my list (in no particular order):

  1. LOST
  2. The Office (Conner and I live blog these)
  3. 24 (still waiting…)

Here’s Jen’s list:

  1. LOST
  2. The Office
  3. Survivor
  4. American Idol
  5. Grey’s Anatomy

So, I’ve got two questions for y’all:

  1. What shows are you looking forward to?
  2. Do you watch them on TV or online?

Ok, first of all, props to you for using the Max Headroom photo. I love it! Brings me back to my childhood. “Hello, I’m Mm-mm-mm-max Headroom!”

Second, yes, we’ve started watching all our shows online now. It’s just so much easier. Since we moved I haven’t hooked up our TV so we’ve spent the whole summer without a TV only watching what we can find online or rent at Blockbuster. Gotta love Hulu. I’m hoping most of the shows I like continue to show their episodes online this season.

    Favorites:
    LOST
    Scrubs
    The Office
    Chuck
Grey’s Anatomy (only because my wife likes it…ok, it is kinda cool)

The jury is still out on the new JJ Abrams show FRINGE. It looks freaky but I’m afraid if I start watching I’ll get hooked just like LOST.

    M-m-m-m-m-max Headroom! (old school)

We’ve done the same thing at times — shut down the TV for extended periods of life. It was great. Now we’re back to selective & scheduled watching for the entire fam.

We want to get a DVR so we can watch it on ‘our’ time.

Shows wife & I are looking forward to:
    • LIFE (love that guy from Band of Brothers)
    • Heroes

    I plan on HULU’ing more!

are at the top of my list! We’ve talked about going cold turkey with the cable too…but Brian wants the internet to be cut as well and I just don’t think I could do without it (sad but true)!
